I’m not easily impressed. These days, there are a few venues cozier than the back lot of CBS Studios where Homenetmen threw a victory party for its 36th annual Navasartian Games. As twilight dimmed to dusk, the 36th Navasartian logo was projected in white stencil font on one side of the building as the opposite side shined with camera lights and red carpet. Read More

It’s hard to imagine the Navasartian Games sans the Victory Banquet. It is the "Party" that has often delivered without holding back the best of Homenetmen. True, the Navasartian Games is a tournament focused on sports competitions, uniforms and perspiration, but not the entire time, mind you. It has a side to it that ekes out the classy and the flamboyant in its members and followers. The guests arrive impeccably dressed. The men well groomed, and in fashionable attire, the women, with their hair teased-up to the moon, wearing the latest that Haute Couture offers, topped off with stilettos that scream "OUCH!" It is often the premise that the search for a diamond in the rough could lead to a back breaking experience. Let me rephrase that. "It is a back breaking experience." In this world of ours, the constant exploration to find anything that predates human interest in anything of value has often been the vehicle that has led many to irreparable physical punishment, and many times, to their death. Sunday, May 15th, 2011, marked the kick-off of the 36th consecutive Navasartian Games opening ceremony with fanfare and pomp. The kick-off was a tribute to an organization whose relentless effort to pursue the adage "Making History, Not Living It," is indicative of how much it has invested in its youth over the decades. It evokes the emotion that, an organization nearing a century of existence has maintained a philosophy so sacrosanct that no one can envision, even the slightest deviation, from its principles and its longstanding mission statement that, our youth are irrepressibly the bright future of our community. Rejoice! The 36th Navasartian Games Are At Hand
As we welcome the month of May and the flowers that bloom under its gaze, a hype of sorts begins to develop in the Armenian Community in the shape of, "The Navasartian Games." It begins with a hush and is quickly replaced by a loudness that causes the hype to escalate in anticipation to the kick-off of, the grandest and most successful tournament on offer to the Armenian community stateside. A tournament, which routinely and traditionally repeats itself year in and year out until its conclusion at a feverish pace on the Fourth of July weekend. The organizers of this event, and under the stewardship of Homenetmen’s Western United States Regional Executive Committee, are a group of esteemed volunteers who have vast experience in putting together a tournament that runs uninterrupted for two months, all the while planning and executing several other events during this period of time that take us right up to the closing ceremonies weekend.

The dreamers can see it clearly even though it’s months away. There’s an oversized stadium in the San Fernando Valley with 20,000 Homenetmen supporters, volunteers, and community members stirring with excitement and roaring for the parade of athletes and scouts from 18 chapters to march into view; proudly wearing their chapter colors and waving their hands and medals.
